What is Kundalini?

" What is Kundalini" connect to the Institute of Consciousness site and (ICR) learning center. They are an organization I have worked with since the early 80's and have a great respect for. Their explanations of "Kundalini" as an intelligent cosmic power, defines a new paradigm that will completely revolutionize all aspects of the modern world.

Kundalini is described as an intelligent force that lays dormant at the base of the spine wrapped around itself three and half times like a resting snake. Once awakened it ascends the central Nadi or Sushumna into the center of the brain resulting in an explosion of consciousness, allowing the individual to merge with the universal. Kundalini was considered by the ancient philosophers and Sages as the energy responsible for humanities evolutionary advancement, from the dust of the earth into conscious individuals. As the connecting thread between the spiritual and physical, it is a psychophysiological mechanism responsible for genius, mystical consciousness, and enduring health, while conversely it is linked to many mental abnormalities and destructive tendencies.

One of the best authority on the Kundalini is the Hatha Yoga Pradipika."The Kundalini is sleeping, closing the door of the Sushumna. She sleeps above the Kanda or where the Nadis unite. She gives liberation to the Yogi and bondage to fools. He who knows her knows Yoga." The location of the Kanda is 12 angulis (or about 9 inches) above the anus and 3 inches long and 3 inches in breadth. It is the shape of a bird's egg and covered with a soft white piece of "cloth.”...... ''Great Rishi Yajnavalkya says the Kanda is about the same location. All authorities on Yoga give the location of the Kanda in the lower part of the body above the anus, and there is sleeping the Kundalini.” (1)
The ancients also believed in a subtle universal life force that flows throughout existence known as Prana (in Sanskrit),(Chi in Chinese-based systems)

.In Yogic philosophy:'Nadis' are pathways prana flows through. The word Nadi comes from the Sanskrit root nad meaning 'channel', 'stream', or 'flow'.(2) Rhythmical breathing and special breathing techniques are supposed to influence the flow of these nadis or energetic currents. According to this kind of interpretation (which is the Yoga interpretation) breathing techniques will purify the Nadis and special yogic poses (asanas) will develop ones nervous system and spiritual potential with the goal to awaken Kundalini and vilify the seven chakras and become enlightened.

In Kundalini yoga, there are three major nadis: the Ida, Pingala, and Sushumna, whereas Pingala is to the right side of the spine, mirroring the Ida. Sushumna runs along the spinal cord in the center, through the seven chakras – Muladhara at the base, and Sahasrara at the top (or crown) of the head. In particular, Prana (active) is supposed to circulate inside Pingala, while Apana (passive) is supposed to circulate inside Ida.(3)

The Ida is considered as feminine nerve plexus, and the Pingala is the masculine, while the Sushumna is located within the spine or central Nadi. Once awakened, Kundalini acts as a purposeful force which transforms the nervous system and brain using Pranic energy, by ascending through the main energy channel, the Sushumna and rewires the brain enabling the expansion of consciousness. Kundalini can be considered as an intelligent guardian of human evolution which guides the regeneration of the body and brain, while Prana is the life force. One might say that Kundalini acts as the architect and Prana the building blocks.

The Reversal of the reproductive system was called Urdhava-retas in yogic terms and is one of the most important keys to understanding Kundalini. The most potent form of this Pranic bio-energy is sublimated sexual secretions which went by many names in sacred texts such as soma, Amrita, ambrosia or ojas. Just as the sexual seed projected outward into the proper matrix of the feminine creates another human being a similar process occurs when the masculine seed or feminine sexual essences are recirculated within the Pranic system and sent upwards, which also results in the creation of a “divine child”, a metaphor alluding to an enlightened person. This sublimating process was the secret to rapid regeneration of the normal seeker into an enlightened seer. It involved much more than simple chastity or celibacy, as seminal retention alone without an active Kundalini cannot achieve the intense biological rewiring of the brain.

Kundalini is active below human awareness in the human race but in some highly evolved persons, whose nervous system and spiritual evolution is very advanced, it can strike like a bolt of lightning, regenerating the whole person, body and mind, turning them into a great poet, or artist, mystic and enlightened being. Because this rebirth is a rare occurrence many people fail to understand the meaning behind ancient mythology and modern religions. Gopi Krishna was an Indian Pundit and enlightened mystic explained the implications of the concept by saying,

“This Mechanism known as Kundalini is the real cause of also-called spiritual and psychic phenomena, the biological basis of evolution and development of personality, the secret origin of all esoteric doctrines, and the master key to the unsolved mystery of creation, the inexhaustible source of philosophy, art and science, and the fountainhead of all religious faiths, past present and future.” (4)
